Marbury, Alex; Letter to Obama, Apr 27 2008
A registered sex offender writes to Senator Obama.
"I have never spent a day in a jail, and though a judge has dismissed the only indictment against me, ... dismissed the possibility of any conviction ...
I must continue to register as a sex offender for the rest of my life, no matter where I go. Why? Because sex offender registration is considered "administrative," not punitive. "
Logue, Derek W.; Of Myths And Monsters; The Cypress Times, Nov 24 2009
Most of what our society believes about sex offenders is not true. Below are just a few of the beliefs we were taught that are either misleading or completely untrue: [... ... ... ...]
We need to seriously consider what truly works, not what simply feeds our anger and fear and makes us “feel good. [...] There are ways to address this issue from a realistic standpoint. [...]
In our narrow focus on the “Registered Sex Offender,” we tend to forget the big picture. Appeals to emotion rather than reason helped create a legal system of perpetual brokenness for victims, offenders, and the community alike.
Cohen, Laurie P.; The Polygraph Paradox; The Wall Street Journal, Mar 22 2008
Article about the use of polygraphy, a method to detect lies during a questioning. Polygraphy has a low reliability, yet it is frequently used, especially by parole officers - and not always by licensed operators. This may lead to incorrect imprisonment of people.
Some of the questioned people say that the polygraph does not correctly measure their acts, but still correctly measures their conscience. Some have said that the prospect of a polygraph test has prevented them from committing crimes or infringing their parole conditions.
Underwager, Ralph, & Wakefield Hollida; Misinterpretation of a Primary Prevention Effort; Child Abuse Accusations, 6(2), 96-107. (1994).; 1994(6(2), ), 96-107., Jan 01 1994
In 1990, Ralph Underwager and Hollida Wakefield gave an interview to the editor of Paidika, The Journal of Paedophilia, a scholarly journal published in Holland. The interview was published in 1993.
Since that time, statements from the interview have been taken out-of-context and misinterpreted as indicating that RU and HW approve of pedophilia and child sexual abuse.
Here, they respond to these criticisms and accusations.
The authors add an Appendix: A Proposal: Primary Prevention Program for Child Sexual Abuse.
Yuill, Richard, & Evans David T.; Pedophilia, Jan 01 2006

shrinkwrapped; The Arab Mind, May 07 2008
Description of the Arabic culture concerning sexuality.
A very strict taboo and very strict rules about 'honor' create an atmosphere of fear ... and desire ... thus frustration ... thus aggression - and myths, especially that it should be the woman who has uncontrollable impulses.
Strong religious rules and practices may hide internal unconscious conflicts.
Epstein, Joseph; The Kindergarchy - Every child a dauphin.; The Weekly Standard, Jun 09 2008
A comparison between the style of child-rearing before and after the 1970s.
Critical questions for the new style: the burden of (too much?) attention and too much pressure to the children, especially at school.
Pancrazi, Jean-Noël, & Thorstad David(Translation); A tribute to Tony Duvert, Aug 23 2008
The writer Tony Duvert, 63, was discovered dead on Wednesday, August 20, at home, in the small village of Thoré-la-Rochelle (Loir-et-Cher). He had been dead for about a month. An investigation has been started, but he appears to have died of natural causes.
Tony Duvert had a genuine fervor: for nature, central especially to Quand mourut Jonathan (1978, tr. 1991 by D. R. Roberts as When Jonathan died), which recalls the love of a man and a child. This relationship takes on the appearance and the rhythm of a biological association, as if, by dint of understanding and harmony, they both had become plants mutually emitting harmful poisons to each other until they were destroyed and separated by society.
Andrews, University St; Experts able to plant false memories in minds
New research into the human memory has found that it is possible to plant false memories in the human mind that can have significant long-term effects on behaviour.
The new study could have significant implications for recovered memories involving abuse - previous research has claimed that it is possible for people to create false memories of being abused as a child, when memories are recovered through suggestive therapy.
Littlejohn, Richard; Jackboot Jacqui brings back the ducking stool, Sep 16 2008
Satire about the measures taken by the UK Government to combat 'paedophiles' - with a serious comment about reality today.
"Even grandparents and neighbours can demand an investigation into the background of any person who comes into contact with the children of family or friends.
In practice, that means absolutely everyone, unless you happen to be a hermit living in a cave in the Orkneys."
Bennetto, Jason; Truth test' to uncover false rape allegations, Oct 31 2000
A "lie-detector" test to help uncover false allegations of rape is being developed by the police and criminologists.
Between 10 and 41 per cent of allegations of rape are made up by the "victim", according to previous research. In the new test, a claimant's statement is analysed and points are given from a list of set clues - people who have made up a rape allegation get a low score, while genuine complaints get a high score.
Kincaid, James R.; Lolita at Middle Age, Oct 17 2008
Short essay on Nabokov's Lolita and the double standard of society against the subjects described in it.
Schwarz, Joel; Child Abuse Increases Risk, Oct 21 2008
Boys who experienced childhood physical or sexual abuse are more likely to use sexually coercive behavior against an unwilling female partner when they are adolescents and young adults.
The study also found that 55 percent of the men who reported coercive behavior did not experience any childhood sexual or physical abuse.
"There is a lot of evidence indicating sexual coercion and aggression is a complex behavior with an array of risk factors. There is this whole group of men for whom we have yet to fully understand what their risk factors are. They are relatively 'average' men without terrible childhood histories, but who engage in this hurtful behavior,"
Favreau, Alyssa; Perversion or personal preference?; http://www.mcgilldaily.com, Nov 10 2008

Especially Mann's Death in Venice and Nabokov’s Lolita are summarized and commented.
Boykin, Sharahn D.; Don't 'be alone with other people's children'; Daily Times, Dec 07 2008
Many youth-based organizations have taken preventative measures to avoid situations in which sex abuse could occur, requiring youth workers to attend mandatory training sessions and submit to criminal background checks.
As a protective measure for both adults and youths, the Boy Scouts has turned such precautions into mandatory policies, said Jennifer Wright, marketing director for the Delmar chapter of the organization.
"No adult can be alone with boys."
Workers are cautioned to keep close tabs on their emotions. "Don't get caught up in the feeling that someone needs you or someone loves you."

Rivas, T.; Friendship and love in positive memories of “pedophile” relationships
In my book Positive Memories, published this year, I present 132 cases of positive memories of erotic and platonic relationships and loose contacts between adults and minors, as recalled by the former minor. It is sometimes claimed that “pedophile” relationships are empty and meaningless and exclusively based on physical attraction. However, many of the memories of former children and teenagers involve friendship and love.
The terms friend(ship), friendly relationship, love, loving or tenderness are used explicitly in more than 50 of the cases included in my book (more than a third of all the cases presented), and affection is also implied in many other cases.
“Pedophilia” as an exclusively sexual phenomenon, is nothing short of a myth.
Here are fifteen examples.
Rivas, T.; Shattering three myths about positive voluntary and harmless “pedophile” relationships, Jul 03 2011
In my recent publication, Positive Memories, I have presented more than 130 cases of memories in former children and teenagers of so-called “ pedophile” relationships and loose contacts, including 4 platonic relationships.
First myth: Some boy lovers seem to believe that only gay or same-sex pedophile relationships can be positive, consensual and psychologically healthy. - Not true.
The second myth reads that a harmless and positive erotic relationship with a minor can only come about after the child has reached puberty. - Not true.
A third myth, that is usually seen as a major problem by critics doubtful of the legitimacy of any type of “pedophile” relationship, is that all such relationships are inevitably ended when the child grows older.
Rivas, T.; Book review Margaux Fragoso. Tiger, tiger: a memoir, Jul 02 2011
The succesful book Tiger, tiger is an autobiography about the author's, Margaux Fragoso, years as a child, adolescent and young adult. Fragoso focuses her narration on her relationship with Peter, an elderly “pedophile”.
It describes what may go wrong in a relationship with someone who has “pedophile” feelings, if the adult partner has serious psychological problems and there is no one in the child's immediate surroundings who makes sure that the relationship remains healthy.
Margaux increasingly feels exploited and used by Peter. She develops very ambivalent feelings for him, while she continues to long for his love and affection.

Ipce; Children who are sexually active; Ipce Magazine, Jun 27 2011
Child sexuality does exist, be it in a specific form: the childish form, which differs from the adult forms.
The response to it in the modern English-speaking culture is that of the Criminal Code: abuse, (young) perpetrator, (young) victim. Sometimes: treatment. Somtimes: education of the children - and teaching the teachers. But always the panicked parents protest.
There are healthier responses and views.
Vera, Diane; Numerous "ritual abuse" cases in Bakersfield / Kern County, California (1982)
A total of eight different "child sex ring" cases were tried in Kern County over the next several years, all based on the testimony of children who had been interviewed in very questionable ways. A total of 46 people were convicted, most likely for crimes that never even happened. The witch hunt stopped only when some children started to accuse some of the social workers, deputy sheriffs and deputy district attorneys themselves.
